An army of the ancient world

Legionaries, cataphracts, ballistae and war elephants: every unit has a counter, so the army you bring matters as much as its size.

Choose your formation

FormationWhat it doesWhen to use it
LineBalanced punch and lossesWhen you are not sure
Triple lineFresh ranks rotate in: a little less punch, far fewer lossesWhen you are strong and want to keep your men
WedgeHits hardest, bleeds most, breaks and falls back if the fight turnsWhen you need a breakthrough and accept the risk

You set one formation for attack and one for defence, and you can change it per battle while it is on. The computer rulers choose theirs by the same rules.

Rest your legions

An army that fought in the last six turns hits softer, and a tired defender holds worse. Timing your attacks, and catching an enemy that has just fought, can matter more than numbers.

One prize: Roma

Every season ends at Roma. Take it, raise the Imperial Palace and hold it, alone or as one alliance. If nobody manages that, the Last Battle decides.

Same game, other eras

Romaterra shares its rules with Terrastate (an alternative 2026) and Ironfront (Europe, 1944). Each era has its own battle choices.

Questions

Is Romaterra free?

Yes. Romaterra is completely free: no payments, no ads, no account and no download. It is a non-commercial hobby project by Wim Kamphorst from the Netherlands.

Is it historically accurate?

No. Romaterra is set in the ancient world and uses its armies and buildings, but the peoples, rulers and flags are invented by the game. It does not retell Roman history.

How do you win?

Take Roma, raise the Imperial Palace on it and hold it. If nobody manages that, the Last Battle decides: whoever holds Roma the longest wins the season.

What are formations?

Before and during a battle you pick a formation for attack and for defence. Line is balanced. Triple line rotates fresh ranks in, with a little less punch and far fewer losses. Wedge hits hardest and bleeds most, and it breaks and falls back if the fight turns against it.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Romaterra runs in any modern browser on phone and desktop. You can install it as an app and play offline.
